Drunk driver crashes into 'Report Drunk Drivers' sign on highway, police say
Police say a suspected drunk driver suffered serious injuries when he crashed his Jeep into a road sign on a California highway Wednesday morning.
The sign read, "REPORT DRUNK DRIVERS. CALL 911."
According to the CHP, around 11:30 a.m., the Jeep Wrangler driver lost control on Highway 1's southbound lanes near the Buena Vista Drive exit.
The Jeep ran over the sign, careened up an embankment, flipped, and landed on its roof.
The driver, identified by the CHP as Stephen DeWitt, 57, of Aptos, was "quite intoxicated," one officer said.
If he had not been wearing his seatbelt, DeWitt could have been killed in the crash, the CHP said.
DeWitt was arrested on DUI charges and flown to Natividad Medical Center’s trauma center.
Southbound traffic backed while the CHP had one lane closed for an hour.
"Don't drink and drive, it's just not worth it," the CHP Santa Cruz wrote on its Facebook page following the crash.
