Additional lane closures, end of May, on Farrington Highway at Maipalaoa Bridge

Posted on May 8, 2024 in Highways News, Main, News

HONOLULU– The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) is issuing the following update on the Maipalaoa Bridge Replacement project for upcoming work scheduled for Thursday, May 30 and Friday, May 31.

These closures are a part of the construction process to install six concrete girders for the permanent bridge structure. On Thursday, May 30, there will be an intermittent single-lane closure of the right lane on Farrington Highway, in the westbound direction, at Maipalaoa Bridge from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This will be for the placement of two cranes for Friday’s girder installation.

On Friday, May 31, the power lines above Maipalaoa Bridge will be deenergized to allow the cranes to work close to the lines for girder installations. This work will require a two-lane closure on Farrington Highway in the Wai’anae-bound direction from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. One town-bound lane will be utilized for westbound traffic contraflow.

Intermittent full closures, up to five-minutes at a time, on Farrington Highway may be necessary to allow crews to safely move girders into place. This is dependent on weather conditions, which crews will assess before starting work for the day. Deenergizing the power lines will not affect surrounding residences or businesses.

Please note, these closures are in conjunction with the 24-hour right shoulder closure in the westbound direction on Farrington Highway.

The anticipated completion date for the Maipalaoa Bridge Replacement project is August 2024. Additional daytime closures will be required after August 2024 to return the roadway to its original condition and clear the worksite. Work will be announced as scheduled.

Motorists are advised to plan accordingly, allow for extra travel time to get to their destinations and proceed with caution through any work areas. For weekly road closure updates, please visit: https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/oahu/

HDOT thanks the public for its cooperation as we work to maintain safe facilities.
